The state of Luo and other traditions

The Dictionary of American Family Names links 羅 to an ancient Luo state in present-day Hubei, and also records adoption by Xianbei families. These are distinct explanations. Conflicting descriptions of the state's chronology are not used to establish dates or a migration route.

One romanization can hide different names

罗 is the simplified form of 羅. Lo and Law are Cantonese spellings; the character is also used in Korean Na or Ra. The different character 駱 can also be romanized Luo, so the written form matters when comparing names.

Finding your roots

Start with
what you know.

You don’t need a complete family tree to begin. A few good questions can turn a familiar name into a new connection.

  1. 01

    Keep the original spelling.

Write down the name in its original script, if known. Keep alternative spellings, tone marks, and the way your family says it.

  2. 02

    Ask about the places.

A village, region, or migration route can offer more context than a surname on its own. Begin with the stories your relatives remember.

  3. 03

Let records tell the next part.

Compare family documents, photographs, and historical records. Keep a note of each source and the questions still unanswered.
